چکیده

Geoffrey E. Hinton Computer Science Dept. University of Toronto Toronto, ONT M5S lA4 We describe a model that can recognize two-dimensional shapes in an unsegmented image, independent of their orientation, position, and scale. The model, called TRAFFIC, efficiently represents the structural relation between an object and each of its component features by encoding the fixed viewpoint-invariant transformation from the feature's reference frame to the object's in the weights of a connectionist network. Using a hierarchy of such transformations, with increasing complexity of features at each successive layer, the network can recognize multiple objects in parallel. An implementation of TRAFFIC is described, along with experimental results demonstrating the network's ability to recognize constellations of stars in a viewpoint-invariant manner.

Modulation of neural activity by angle of rotation during imagined spatial transformations.

Imagined spatial transformations of objects (e.g., mental rotation) and the self (e.g., perspective taking) are psychologically dissociable. In mental rotation, the viewer transforms the location or orientation of an object relative to stable egocentric and environmental reference frames. In imagined shifts of perspective, the viewer's egocentric reference frame is transformed with respect to s...

Transformations of visuospatial images.

Transformations of visuospatial mental images are important for action, navigation, and reasoning. They depend on representations in multiple spatial reference frames, implemented in the posterior parietal cortex and other brain regions. The multiple systems framework proposes that different transformations can be distinguished in terms of which spatial reference frame is updated. In an object-...

Distance Metrics based Vehicle Object Identification in Dynamic Vision

Vehicle object identification is a challenging issue in the visual surveillance. In recent years, video monitoring and surveillance system have been widely utilized for traffic monitoring and management. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to identify the moving objects from the sequence of video frames which contains dynamically changing backgrounds in the noisy environment. Reference to ou...

On the Real and Apparent Positions of Moving Objects in Special Relativity: The Rockets-and-String and Pole-and-Barn Paradoxes Revisited and a New Paradox

The distinction between the real positions of moving objects in a single reference frame and the apparent positions of objects at rest in one inertial frame and viewed from another, as predicted by the space-time Lorentz Transformations, is discussed. It is found that in the Rockets-and-String paradox the string remains unstressed and does not break and that the pole in the Barn-and-Pole parado...

Recognition by Probabilistic Hypothesis Construction

We present a probabilistic framework for recognizing objects in images of cluttered scenes. Hundreds of objects may be considered and searched in parallel. Each object is learned from a single training image and modeled by the visual appearance of a set of features, and their position with respect to a common reference frame. The recognition process computes identity and position of objects in ...
